Process & Outcomes
What is parent coaching?
Here are some examples:
Example 1: Mrs. Smith has a three-year-old daughter who will not sit at the table very long at meals, and when she does, she just plays with her food and complains. Coaching gave Mrs. Smith a set of guidelines to follow to teach her daughter new habits at mealtimes.
Three weeks later, Mrs. Smith's daughter sits at the table for meals and tries new foods when they are offered.
Example 2: Mrs. Jones' school-aged son has problems remembering to bring home his homework assignments, and so Mrs. Jones spends time communicating with his teachers about this problem. Coaching helped Mrs. Jones come up with a process to shift the responsibility to her son for homework completion and grades, so the details were left up to him, with guided transition to independence.
Six weeks later Mrs. Jones' son is finding time to complete his homework in school with the help of the teacher if needed.
Example 3: Ms. Gray's daughter has been disrespectful to her since middle school started. This attitude is weakening Ms. Gray's confidence in her own authority as a parent, which makes her reluctant to set and enforce limits.
Coaching gave Ms. Gray the support she needed to continue setting and enforcing the limits that her daughter needed, and showed her how to foster a more respectful attitude in her daughter. Ms. Gray learned to demonstrate understanding, and discovered how to tailor her approach to support this developmental stage.

Example 4: Mr. Kaye recently left his job to spend more time with his children, allowing them to spend less time in day care, as his wife works full time. He wants someone who can serve as a sounding board for his ideas about how to engage his non-athletic son in physical activities [what's the problem?] and help him evaluate the effectiveness of his approach.

A discussion with a parent coach helped him recognize the small signs of progress that indicate he is on the right track, and so his confidence in his abilities and techniques is strengthened. |

It's Summertime!
Salad season is here! Try fresh fruit in the salad to entice those who are just warming up to salads in general.
Also:
Visiting a farmer's market helps children connect the food on their plate to the effort that went into producing it, and expands their awareness of different varieties of fruits and vegetables. Bonus for the cooks: many fresh items taste best served raw!
